I
designed the box and promoted its use, because the responsible
officials in the city showed no interest in the collection
of waste paper. They considered that the citizens of Split
were not ready, and had no interest nor wish to collect separated
paper.
A
short time after a paper factory accepted the proposed box
and its concept, showing that the responsible city officials
had not been correct, this cardboard box could be found at
the entrance of practically every house in Split and later
also in some other Croatian cities and islands. It thus became
a sign of the presence of ecological conscientiousness in
a city that daily threw away about 70 tons of paper, whilst
at the same time the paper industry in Croatia was importing
old paper.
This
method of collecting is willingly used by citizens, because
it also enables older people to collect paper, which can then
be picked up just by calling a telephone number which is printed
on the box. Also printed on the box are a slogan and messages
about the ecological, economical and energy uses that are
realised from the collection of waste paper.
According
to information from the factory that collects paper, 1,700
tonnes of paper for recycling were collected in the city of
Split in 2003 with the help of this box (which I created and
designed in 2001)
In 2004-2006, the administration of PAN paper did not
want to give me information about the amount of collected
paper!?
